BGSU Earth Week

All BGSU Earth Week events are free and open to the public!

In January 2015, BGSU completed its Climate Action Plan and publicly committed to being “carbon neutral” by 2040 in order to combat the increasingly apparent negative effects of global climate change.

This April, the university is mobilizing its community to get involved with sustainability initiatives through a vast array of programming & events during our annual Earth Week Celebration.

MONDAY, APRIL 16TH

Earth Week Kickoff Event: Tree Planting Service Project

1:30pm – 3pm Meeting behind Bowen-Thompson Student Union

Join the Office of Sustainability for this fun annual tree planting service project! All are invited to help add to BGSU’s campus tree population. Tools and gloves provided at work site. Please no open toe shoes.

TUESDAY, APRIL 17TH

Film Screening: The Call of the Scenic River: An Ohio Journey

7pm – 9pm Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater, room 206

Join the Office of Sustainability for an Earth Week film screening. Q & A by Christina Kuchle, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Scenic Rivers Program. Come learn about the Ohio Scenic Rivers program, the first such program in the United States, and now celebrating its 50 year anniversary. Learn how you can be a part of protecting, preserving and enjoying these vital water resources.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18TH

Eco Fair

11am – 2pm Union Oval

Join the Office of Sustainability for our annual Eco Fair, located outdoors in front of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, (rain location in lobby of Anderson Arena/Memorial Hall). There’s something for everyone at the annual Eco Fair! Environment and sustainability related organizations, both on and off campus, as well as departments and classes will have information to share. Tree seedlings and plants, reusable bags, involvement opportunities, and fun!

Rights of Nature Panel/Forum

7pm Olscamp 113

Rights of Nature Panel/Forum sponsored by Environmental Action Group/UPSA. Does nature have rights, and what are they? How do humans impact those rights and how does this impact our environment? Join the Environmental Action Group and the USPA in a spirited panel discussion including faculty members from Biology, Environment & Sustainability, Economics, Philosophy and Geology.

FRIDAY, APRIL 20TH

Tour of Bowling Green Solar Field on Carter Road

1:30pm Meeting in Bowen-Thompson Student Union parking lot

Join us for a trip to the DG AMP solar field just outside Bowling Green on Carter Road, the largest solar field in the state! Get up close with the solar panels; learn about the technology and how the energy is produced and used in Bowling Green. Prior registration is required. To sign up: email greenbg@bgsu.edu. Vans leave BTSU parking lot at 1:30pm.

Friday Night Lights: Earth Week Edition

6:30pm Meeting outside Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater room 206

Every Friday night at 6:30pm, students come together outside the Union Theater room 206 on the second floor and divide up to go turn off lights in selected buildings. This saves both energy, (thus reducing BGSU emissions) and money! No prior sign up is required. We’ll have some special Earth Week treats for volunteers and a special guest to introduce the program for the evening!

Community Earth Day Celebration

2pm – 4pm 515 Sand Ridge Rd Bowling Green OH 43402

Join us for a city-wide Earth Day event at Montessori School; See sites.google.com/site/communityearthday2014. Both the Office of Campus Sustainability and the Department of the Environment & Sustainability at BGSU will sponsor events and activities. This is a family-friendly event with all kinds of fun ways to learn about the environment, from planting seeds to creating art!
